The NM Chapter of the BMW CCA visited the Gilman Tunnels during the Cardinal Point drive through the Jemez mountains on November 20, 2021. The tunnels were built in the early 1920s by the Santa Fe Northwestern Railway to haul timber from the Jemez mountains to a sawmill in Bernalillo and were used by logging trucks through the early 1970’s. The tunnels currently serve as an entryway to the dramatic Rio Guadalupe Box Canyon. After the visit to the tunnels, we continued our drive through the Jemez on a beautiful Fall day, eventually reaching Santa Fe for a nice lunch at the Santa Fe Bar and Grill.
